My camera shoots fascists<p>It didn't even occur to me that oil change shops were selling data (name/address/state of drivers license issue, make/model/year of vehicle, license plate number, location, VIN, odometer — at minimum) until one of them asked for my email and phone number. They insisted, so I gave them fake info and told them I was doing so 🤷‍♂️</p><p>I was at the beginning of a long road trip, 500 miles over recommended oil change point and didn't have time to do it myself. Usually I use a small town shop in California while I'm there, but I need to find a similar place here in Southern Arizona for the rest of the year.</p><p>The little bit of money I save doing it myself, honestly, doesn't make up for the hassle. It's another invisible "privacy tax" that predatory corporations externalize onto us. </p><p>Just for fun, ask them what data they collect and who they sell it to. My camera shoots fascists<p>To no one in particular, but I just have to note that I really like almost everything about my Toyota FJ Cruiser. So much of it is so well designed. Except one thing: the oil filter. How could they get so many things so right, but that one so abysmally wrong?</p><p>Last time I was able to get the housing off without the special tool but the last shop that changed the oil hammered that thing on tight. So now I have to wait till tomorrow morning to see if the local parts store has one. If not, I might pour the old oil back in so I can drive to the next town with a bigger parts store. </p><p>Why am I doing this myself?
