Lukas FotogruberWelcome to some new people who I saw joining Pixelfed lately!

I want to share some impressions about this platform:

Thanks for joining Pixelfed! The grip that IG has on the art scene seems to be very strong, so thanks for promoting the alternative. For self-promo and big network effects, Bluesky is considered the lesser evil by many in the cultural sector and academia, so I could imagine many art people ending up there once IG becomes too dirty. The other current alternative is maybe the Flashes app for Bluesky (in the news as an instagram alternative). But since Bluesky is very centralized by design (with the central relay) I would not promote it as an ethical alternative for now.

If you want to reach from the Fediverse (Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc.) to Bluesky there are bridge services you can use to have your posts show up there. One nice thing about Bluesky is, it is far easier to cross-post between the Fediverse and Bluesky, Bluesky is not a complete silo like IG or Twitter/X.

My personal experience of some years on Mastodon is, it is a very different scene on the alternative social media, with a completely different feed culture, and more connected to community spaces, activism etc. While I experience Bluesky to be very similiar to X now, echo chambers, doom, etc., just mostly without the open right wing extremists, as they stayed on X. I am writing this to encourage others to join the Fediverse (Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc.), and not expect the same as IG or X, but to enjoy the difference.

But also something practical on this, Mastodon is far more extablished, Pixelfed is pretty new. So Pixelfed right now might not feel like it, like full of alternative and activist content, but the local feeds being full of more conventional photography of nature and sightseeing, which for me was initially off-putting, as I found it very kitschy. Therefore I'd encourage everyone to follow hashtags, and also Mastodon accounts from Pixelfed (of which you only get the image posts then, which is also a nice experience), in order to get a feel for the communication and content there.

Oh and one last thing, previews not generating immediately happens from time to time, I expect they will fix that soon.
