High Speed x4 Synchro Record from CD to MD
(the LED is way more yellow in reality, I guess low light white balance is at play)
Mini Disc Zwanghaftigkeit
° Situation: ongoing search to (re)acquire a MiniDisc portable player of my youth (higher spec than NetMD)
° Requirements: support for Hi-MD 1GB data format on 80min discs, near-mint (pink or flat black, metal case)
° Extra: Hi-MD capable professional non-portable recorder with DAT (adat/spdif) and RS232 or RS485 controls
Yes, there are NiB models on eBay but the pricing is generally silly/unrealistic with auctions often ending without meeting reserve. There are occasional MZ-EH70 in pink, but not near-mint ... and so the search continues.
Just had a #MiniDisc delivery. These are destined to be overwritten, but I guess today I will mostly be listening to... Aled Jones and "an excellent combination of 2 CDs worth of haunting, atmospheric music with some great voices and music"
I still have my Sony MZ-N707 #MiniDisc player (my first was an MZ-R70) and it still works, so last year I went through all of the discs that I could find (I still don’t know where my Sony Neige MDs went) and found the one that has recordings from 25 years ago of my friend!
I’m therefore quite excited to see that the MZ-N707 is one of the models that’s supported by Web MiniDisc Pro’s “homebrew” features that should allow me to digitally copy the audio data from that disc
I really wish the minidisc format was still used. It’s one of the best technopunk media ever invented and it could’ve been so much more than it ended up being. It seems like the decision by Sony to use its own software interface rather than integrate it into the host OS filesystem was the biggest mistake. It’s a layer of friction for the user that didn’t need to exist.
she's here!!!!!!! my #minidisc recorderrrrrrrrrrrrrrr she's so pretty
Made a quick prototype of a possible caetridge design. In fact it could be used for Video or data as well but I primarily see the haptic part of it important for music.
Might create a git repo with design concept and designfiles so its easy to grasp what the concept is about.
Developing a player may take a few weekends but there is plenty of good base dev boards available, difficult part is the pin contact section.
More of a spontaneous idea currently that needs to be refined of course.
Made a backup of our only full album to mini-disc this past week. I have to say that minidisc is indeed the ultimate physical presence. The entire haptic and limitation to the usual 80mins are giving me a feeling of peace while listening to some old mixtapes. No trillion possibilities, just focus on whats currently playing with reduced fomo and constant skipping around trough streams.
Theoretically we could skip the laser and magnetic drives and just have 700MB sd cards encapsulated in cases. The size is perfect.
The player would be rather cheap to manufacture tech wise but could be made with some nice and solid aluminium with a certain weight and a big replaceable 18650 standard cell. ( Only music, not even snake on it.)
Obsolete Sony has a fantastic "Visual Guide to Sony MiniDisc" tribute.
If you haven't already done so, you should really check it out.

for two years i've been promising myself i'd order a big box of used minidiscs from japan
i finally gave in and order some last week. fifty discs, all with cases, and various makes and models. i am in wonder at the many different colours and translucencies
some have english labels, and appear to be old live band recordings
Over the past year I've been moving my daily tech stack away from always-connected to more purposeful offline-first technology.
Sure a phone can do everything these can in a smaller, lighter and more powerful package. But these allow me to fully disconnect from distractions and focus on a single task when needed.
I still heavily use my phone, but it's nice to have these as options and brings me more joy than any next-gen technology does.

Yeah, I love staring at my #MiniDisc deck, especially in the dark.

@amberisvibin personally, I think the #MiniDisc is what happened when someone at #Sony looked at the #engineering #perfection of the 3,5" FDD [www.youtube.com] and decided to use the lessions learned for a optical media.
Personally I want a standard for removeable SSDs [github.com] in the 3,5" form factor...
