Thor's Helmet

Thor not only has his own day (Thursday), but a helmet in the heavens. Popularly called Thor's Helmet, NGC 2359 is a hat-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thor's Helmet is about 30 light-years across.

A quick hour of imaging as the moon rose last night. This is the Pinwheel Cluster in the upper left and the Starfish Cluster in the lower right. There are a couple of small nebulae in the lower left quadrant, but I would have needed more time to really bring them out.

An image taken from orbit shows the potato-shaped satellite Phobos orbiting above Mars. The perspective shows Phobos very close to the Martian limb. Phobos appears predominantly grey, while the surface of Mars displays tones ranging from rusty red to the bluish hue of its external atmosphere layer. Craters on Mars are larger than those on Phobos.
