Our comprehensive #Moderator Handbook is in the final stages of editing and will soon be available as a valuable resource for both new and experienced moderators. We plan to introduce hash and match services to identify and manage non-consensual intimate imagery and terrorist and violent extremist content, using platforms like StopNCII and GIFCT.

You can track our in-progress and planned activities on our [Activity Tracker page: connect.iftas.org/library/ifta .

My #fedivision (#vision inspired by the #fediverse): Within the next 20 years people will begin to transfer the structure of the fediverse and how it is managed to the real world.

Citizens will be able to choose the country they wanna live in just the way they today choose the software (#friendica #mastodon #misskey ...), the server and the app they use to socially interact with each other. If they don't like how their server (formerly known as country) is governed they can pack their things and move to another one with close to zero transaction cost.

Today users can voluntarily give money to admins to pay communication infrastructure like #servers and cost's for #administration & #moderation. Today we all are obliged to pay #taxes (except for clever antisocial actor's) in our countries. In the future we can decide where (if at all) our money goes to. There will be admins and servers that have special real world agendas (green energy, strengthening local communities, raising awareness for minorities, air taxis ...) And there might even be servers that pay their users for being there. This money will be demanded from #companies or other non-social actor's like #billionaire's for not de-federating them. They will pay the fee's as it will be their only way to socially interact with or show commercials to others.

In 20 years admins and moderators will be what #politicians and #bureaucrats are today. Servers are what countries are today. Just like #Wikipedia is today what the Encyclopædia Britannica was 20 years ago.

@robb

I just realized you're also a #moderator on social.lol. That's cool.

To save your time and my time I've decided to post two images so that it's super clear we're talking about the same thing.

Here you can now see the difference as I placed both images next to each other. One of these #Mastodon sites got a "More from" while the other one(the one I'm from) is lacking such a thing.

Am I correct that I can do nothing about this? I can't fix this issue, right?

How many of you have listened to The Moderators on BBC Sounds?

While they’ve focused on Meta, X, YouTube, etc, we’d love to hear what Fediverse moderators think - is it similar to your experience? Do you think we can learn from it?

Listen to it here: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0024w8d .

🌏 🌍 🌎 Our #moderator community is beginning the work of translating shared resources in to a number of languages to support volunteers around the world.

We'd love your help!

#Deutsch and #한국어 are top asks, but we'd be grateful for any and all contributions on our crowd-sourced translation project: crowdin.com/project/dtsp

Add a translation, proof-read what's been added, request more languages - all input welcome!

...and to continue for a moment, let me get into the personal side of this.

I really do love this place, so full of interesting people that I don't think I'd encounter anywhere else, so full of actual discourse, and yet so safe for many groups who don't otherwise have a platform they can feel safe on. Not only that, I see this place is being directly beneficial to #democracy and perhaps human #culture itself: I believe very strongly in the #Fediverse, as a movement.

That's why I #volunteer as a #moderator on #TechHub in the first place, it's why I work so hard to bring people together, it's why I put together that massive "worst actors" #blocklist.

This call out is not simply an attempt to capitalize politically for some random candidate, I really and truly do believe that Donald Trump will be a threat, not only to many of our most beloved creators, but to this network itself, should he win.

Kamala Harris, despite any flaws, is most certainly our ally. Vote for her, get your friends to vote for her.

Did you know we run a community for Fediverse moderators?

It was inspired by our Moderator Needs Assessment, especially this powerful quote from one moderator;

“together we are stronger."

We couldn’t agree more, which is why we launched IFTAS Connect, a new community of practice designed specifically for Fediverse moderators.

So, personally, I like to send messages to everyone who #reports, at least once. Even if it's a spam bot, I want to let them know that a real person looked at the report and did something, because I want to build that (very realistic) expectation on the network. It's a failure case if people think that someone isn't reading the reports they put in.

I've also had a couple cases where someone has said something totally inappropriate in a conversation, and I've responded by leaving a message not only for them, but a private message to the other people in the conversation to let them know that a moderator is taking some action.

The main purpose of this is to build a better set of expectations of the network, but also to encourage people to report in general: I really worry that not enough stuff is getting reported, and having a #moderator thank you for a report is an easy way to reinforce the #reporting behavior.

🚀 We're thrilled to announce a new collaboration with @bonfire! We're bringing frontline moderators and Bonfire developers together to co-design and build moderation tools. Using a prosocial approach, this initiative empowers the #moderator community to directly request features and give rapid feedback on modular tools tailored to their needs.

I meant to mark this with fanfare, but I apparently missed the date.

One year ago, September 23, 2023, I got on a Discord Call with @nicdex to work out me coming on TechHub #staff as a #Moderator. There was another influx incoming, and I wanted to help Fedi in any way I could, so I #volunteered, and TechHub needed another experienced moderator.

Since then, I've learned a lot and done a lot, including helping resolve 1397 reports, 228 of which came from me, and expanded the role in a lot of ways I felt were important, including publishing a curated blocklist, found at...

As we move forward, I have more plans in mind for how to improve and expand the Fediverse, both in moderation and general experience. We'll see what gets done!

For now, thanks to all of you for being the #Fediverse, thanks to #Mastodon and all the other softwares, and thanks to the #ActivityPub team for laying the groundwork.

Let's keep building #Fedi!

📢 We have 97 responses to our 2024 #Moderator Survey, let's get to 100 today!

The survey will ask about your experience moderating or administering a federated community, and what resources and services you want us to focus on in the coming year.

We spend money so you don't have to. If you don't tell us what to do with the funds we raise, we might not get to the thing that would help you the most.

All qs optional. All admins and mods welcome!

🐬 According to Life, the Fediverse, and Everything, we've had 42 responses to our #Moderator Survey so far!

Last year we had over 130, we want as many people as possible to tell us how we can help support #moderation in the Fediverse!

If you self-host, or run a large server, or anything in between, this is your chance to help us prioritise our resources:

To make sure our products and services are both effective and solving actual problems, we provide a stipend to a group of moderators to review what we’re working on and ensure a broad range of voices are heard throughout the process.

We are so grateful to everyone who stepped up to help guide this work.
