Oh chooms, I've seen so many posts today with people "worrying" that users are migrating to Bluesky. Let me put it this way: just let them wander off, don't be upset about it. Sure, we're all thrilled when more people join the fediverse, but that's just how it goes—people come and go. And honestly, are they even the ones who want meaningful exchanges, or are they just chasing their dopamine fix from likes?

I've seen this happen so many times before, even back when Twitter was still Musk-free. There were always waves of users jumping ship to other social media platforms—does anyone remember Ello, Path, App.net, etc.? All investor-inflated social networks that are now long gone.

The same fate awaits Bluesky someday—a glossy, investor-driven social media platform that will eventually hit its breaking point, sell itself to AI companies, and quietly die while the executives walk away with pockets full of cash.

Mark my words.

The fediverse? It'll probably still be around as a niche.

The fediverse is a place shaped by YOU, not some corporate overlords. It's all about you, so let's not play the part of grumpy "nerds." Instead, let's be a solid community that achieves more than all the users on Bluesky combined ever will, because one day they'll drown in their own algorithmic and GDPR nightmare.

My posts aren't meant to be harsh; I understand where the concern is coming from. We've built something beautiful here — it works, it's thriving — but now a few are jumping ship. It's like a party where people slowly start leaving, but as you probably know, the last ones to stay are usually the coolest folks. So it's pretty cool that if you're reading this, you're likely still in the fediverse.

Don't worry too much; sure, it's tempting to follow the other fish right into the net. A poorly moderated net, a GDPR-questionable net, a net stuffed with cash that the owners can barely handle because greed is kicking in so hard and all that matters is growth—not you. Trust me, on Bluesky, you're just another number that rises so the owners can brag about their user count to lure in more investors.

Yep, I'm being a bit polemical. But I think a little reality check won't hurt. Why am I telling you this? I used to be one of those corporate folks, playing the game where everything that matters is growth. The investors must be kept happy so more investors will come. Eventually, the whole thing blows up—and then you're out, just like I was. Don't let them play you for a fool; just don't play the game—you won't win - you just a fucking number.

Here? Here you are not a number. Here, you are just you, as you are.

@revengeday hear hear! :cyberheart_red: :corteximplant:

@revengeday It's also like someone dating you. If they want to leave, let them. Nobody is happy if they stay.

My ego says that they'll be back and see that the grass isn't actually greener, anyways.

@revengeday
I'll take a handful of people I can be messy and inconsistent around over an audience I need to perform for any day.

Cozy factor over growth factor :neocat_comfy:

@revengeday
I mean, where I work always tries for growth too, but we're a library, so that's just more people using their tax dollars. :P

@revengeday The reason I joined Mastodon a couple years back was because I thought it was something the same but different.

A few years in, I’ve realized that the Fediverse as a whole is something I needed to discover because it’s so genuine. It’s not “Blue app without Muskrats” or “Lizard man cultivated social app,” but an ecosystem of genuine people where I can be free and happy.

Fickle hearts carry no passion, so I definitely agree with your statements here!

@revengeday This is so detailed and well-written, thank you! I recently made an account over there, just to be able to use the platform for once and evaluate it. I came to the conclusion that the reason nearly everybody named for joining "because everyone goes/is there", which is also the peer pressure problem of all non federated nets, is also not that true. There are a lot of accounts, but a lot of them feel "dead inside". No real interaction. (And I already got followed by bots... :psyduck:)

Quiet public

@revengeday Thats part of why fedi will always have a special place in my heart. Genuine people, who made their way here, to find, interact and collaborate with each other. :givelove:

@revengeday Fediverse isn't financially motivated, so I can't imagine it will go away anytime... well, until people literally die off.

It's like Newsgroups. UseNet was still available up --checks records-- Oh.. nevermind. Some people are even using it now.

Public

@revengeday this unworrying is the beautiful reality of not needing to make profit and harvest data / ad impressions from users. It's nice :)

Public

@revengeday will bluesky supplant twitter? current course and speed... a good chance. it is becoming impossible to avoid advertisers and bots. mastodon is just not user-friendly. every time i see "other servers" i wince. this is not a mass market platform.

Quiet public

@revengeday 100% Agree. I kinda wrote about why Mastodon (or better yet, the Fediverse itself) will never die (or ist at minimum near-death-proof) shellsharks.com/notes/2023/11/

Bsky, Threads, X, all those networks you mentioned, none of them have what Masto/Fedi has. We're for the people by the people. Simple as that.
